An Eye for An Eye - The Guide to Healthy Vision

Posted by Jo on May 30, 2011 at 9:57 AM Comments comments (0)

Going blind is among one of the most terrifying traumas to happen to your body. Unfortunately, most people do not realize their eyesight is one of the most vulnerable parts in their body. The ability to see should never be taken for granted. As many real-life tales are documented, your eyesight can be quickly and easily lost. This is why you should always take great care of your eyes.

The best preventative measure to ensure a healthy vision is performing an annual check-up with your optometrist. This medical professional will run a series of optical tests to determine whether you need glasses or not, which specific type suits your vision, and if you have any outstanding ailments that need to be treated immediately. Keep in mind that an optometrist is not an 'eye doctor' by the strictest definition of the word, although they can refer you to an extensive network of specialized doctors if the situation calls for one.

Shopping for the right pair of glasses is also important for your optical well-being. Most people usually pick their eyeglasses based on their aesthetics, which is an adequate enough reason, but you should not make your decision solely based on this factor. You should also consider how comfortable these glasses feel on your face, as well as their practical application in your everyday life. For example, you may find it necessary to request a specialized type of lenses if you are working outdoors a lot.

Some people also wear contact lenses, although cautious measures must be taken to avoid any medical hazards. First of all, you should always clean and disinfect your contacts on a regular basis, preferably after each usage. Also, you should not wear contact lenses for an extended period of time, for the fear of harming and straining your eyesight. In addition, you should still buy a pair of glasses as an alternative back-up, because you will not be able to wear contact lenses all the time.

It is very important to take care of your eyes through your regular habits. This is commonly achieved through a healthier and more nutritious diet. Stock up on your Vitamin A and Vitamin C to strengthen the retina within your eyes. These types of vitamins are found in many fruits and vegetables, so you should plan for a balanced meal each day to ensure your healthy vision

A Healthy Dog is a Happy Dog - Diseases & Medications

Posted by Jo on May 13, 2011 at 10:09 AM Comments comments (0)

All pet owners know that raising a dog is a huge responsibility. Even though this is a highly rewarding experience most of the time, there are some moments when I struggle as a dog owner. It's not that I don't love my dog, but rather it's difficult to take care of another being who cannot communicate openly with you. Raising a dog is like raising a small child incapable of speech. You have to spot subtle visue cues in order to identify its emotions and possibly any sickness symptoms.

When your dog gets sick, you will notice changes to its behavioural patterns. If a healthy dog is a happy dog, then the opposite is true as well, since sick dogs will be less lively and less energetic than usual. It might even lose its appetite, and wake up at irregular hours of the day. If this behaviour persists over a couple of days, the dog is probably sick and you should take it to the veternarian for a medical check-up.

Pet owners should take preventive measures to make sure the dog does not succumb to common illness. Taking care of an animal's well-being is a proactive approach that more animal owners should follow. For example, you could research on possible illnesses and medications for dogs online to develop your understanding. The k9 advantix medication, for example, can control and protect the dog from major ticks and biting pests. It quickly stops the spread of canine diseases. Learning about this disease and the symptoms can save you a lot of trouble as a pet owner, and spare your animal from a lot of suffering on their end.

You should always do your research before purchasing pet medicine at a pharmacy or online. It is important to correctly diagnose your dog's condition before letting it consume any medication. When in doubt, always check with the local veternarian. Your dog's life is no laughing matter and you should take it as seriously as you treat your own.

Dogs are loyal and sensitive creatures that may not always communicate their feelings openly. When they get sick, these animals will not necessarily express its sickness to you. As an observant pet owner, you will have to notice all the necessary signs and symptoms pertaining to its sickness. If the dog is acting strangely, the chances are that it might be sick. Take active measures to prevent this from happening. Your dog deserves a healthy living too!

How to Protect Your Eyes

Posted by Jo on November 25, 2010 at 11:48 AM Comments comments (0)

Having a healthy set of eyes is more than just passing your eye exam. Healthy eyes means having a combinationof visual comfort, visual sharpness and long term vision protection from harmful UV rays and bright glaring lights we experience every day. As our eyes are arguably one of the most important senses we have, learning how to protect them is crucial.

The most common energy that we are constantly exposed to especially during the summer season is ultraviolet radiation. UV rays are invisible. We can’t see them but nevertheless they are harmful as UV light from the sun not only causes sunburn to our skin but can also damage the cornea of our eyes. Continuous exposure to these rays can therefore cause cataracts which are clouding in the lens of the eye paving way to retina damage and hence complete blindness if you are not careful.

One way to protect your eyes from UV rays is through using UV sunglasses outdoors even on overcast days.Wearing hats during sunny days will also help block away UV rays from the atmosphere. For those who have poor vision, there are some prescription mens glasses and women's glasses in the marketplace that have 100% UV coating. You may be tempted to buy some cheap glasses in stores that do not offer UV protection. However, with the increasing levels of UV rays coupled with climate change, your eyes will be at greater risks. With this in mind, make sure you know that actual UV coating is clear and that coated or tinted glasses does not imply UV protection. The tinting or dark color seen on regular glasses are forlight sensitivity and do nothing for UV ray protection.

As more and more people spend majority of their time in front of a computer monitor, it is a good idea to take proper care of your eyes by taking breaks away from the computer or by closing your eyes for a few minutes. Also, ensure that you have proper lighting as you work at your computer and make sure there is an adequate distance between you and your computer monitor.

Each and every one of us wants and deserves healthy vision. Though our genes may play a role in the quality of our overall sights, our lifestyle, diet and habits are major contributing factors to the fitness of our vision today and in the future. Take some of these tips to ensure that you take the necessary steps into protecting your sense of sight.

Four Weight Loss Tips That You Probably Did Not Consider

Posted by Jo on August 20, 2010 at 3:08 PM Comments comments (0)

Routine exercise, combined with a healthy diet, is the most ideal way to lose weight. This is a very popular belief in the mainstream society. While there is a lot of truth to the advice, there are also other unconventional methods of losing weight. Their degree of effectiveness varies, but they are worth some consideration especially if the traditional strategies are not working to your favour. Besides, it never hurts to make helpful little adjustments that will ultimately enhance your healthy lifestyle.

1. Drinking water is healthy for your body

Not many people consider water as an important weight loss tool, but you should drink at least eight cups of this on a frequent basis. Water is essential for your health. While it is not sufficient enough to sustain your body in the long run, your body needs lots of fluids to replenish properly. A dehydrated body is more susceptible to gaining weight through storing excess fat. You will also need to consume lots of water after an intense work-out session. In addition, water also helps with digestion, and is an effective mechanism to prevent you from overeating.

2. Eat slowly means your body will digest faster

In our busy schedules, we have a tendency to cram meals down our throats so that we can get on with our everyday lives. This messes up the digestion system in our body, which in turn slows down the weight loss program. What is the rush? As much as you want to finish your meal, eating should be a slow and enjoyable process with plenty of time for your body to digest the food. Eating slowly has many benefits, because your stomach can respond back when it is full, so that you do not overeat. If you eat too rapidly, your body mechanisms won’t respond up to speed, so you can be quite full or even bloated yet you will still feel hungry.

3. Smaller portions give off bigger benefits

Full-service dining restaurants are guilty of serving extremely large portions. This is intentional, because you are meant to stay inside and enjoy the dining experience for as long as you can. However, the obvious logic is that your body intakes fewer calories by consuming less quantities of food. This does not mean that you should stop eating forever, but rather you should opt for smaller servings each time. If you are given too much food, which you can determine by your body’s response, then you should not continue overindulging yourself. The most important aspect of a healthy lifestyle is to understand your limitations. You can always save the leftover food for another time.

4. Rest more than you eat

Getting sufficient amount of sleep is very important for weight loss. Your body needs a certain amount of rest everyday, so you are doing a major disservice by staying up late or sleeping at irregular hours. Your body may suffer due to a lack of sleep. In fact, it actually stores excess fat for energy. Therefore, you need to rest properly, so that your internal system replenishes rather than recesses.

Saunas and Their Many Benefits

Posted by Jo on June 25, 2010 at 9:24 AM Comments comments (0)

Recently I’ve been considering purchasing a sauna, for all of their health benefits. Saunas not only promote weight loss, they increase circulation, improve complexion, eliminate toxins from the body, relive pain, and much more. There are two main types of saunas, traditional steam saunas and infrared saunas, both which provide many benefits.

A steam sauna works by having a heater heat up water, creating steam, it is this steam that is used to transfer heat from the heater to the individual(s) in the sauna. The main issue with this type of sauna is that in order for it to work it needs to create a very humid environment, which may be uncomfortable for some individuals. Unlike traditional saunas, infrared saunas, a recent innovation in saunas, do not require a humid environment in order to be effective.

Both types of saunas promote weight loss and weight maintenance this is done through them promoting an increased metabolism and promoting sleep. Having an increased metabolism allows individual to digest food quicker, meaning that you can eat more and not gain weight. Though many individuals do no always see the correlation between sleep and weight loss, there is one. If an individual is able to get the needed amount of sleep, then they are less likely to ‘eat to stay awake’; this means that they will only eat when they are hungry, not over-loading their bodies with unnecessary food intake.

The entire purpose of a sauna is to heat the body and provide similar results to that of having just completed strenuous exercise. This includes increase in your blood circulation rate. There are many benefits of increased circulation, and those include increased completion clarity, pain relief and more. Because the blood is traveling at a faster rate oils and other dirt have the opportunity to be removed, clearing the skin and changing the tone, texture and overall appearance. Pain relief, like that of arthritis and other bruising is also minimized through sauna use. The reasoning behind this is that oxygenated blood is able to reach various parts of the body faster, helping relieve the pain or bruising a little.

There are many sauna benefits that can be obtained from using both a traditional steam sauna and an infrared sauna. Using or purchasing the one that is right for you is key; some people may like the feel of a traditional sauna better, while others take preference to infrared saunas.

Braces 101

Everyone, at some point or another, is scared of going to the dentist.  Whether it’s to get a root canal, a crown put in or an ordinary cleaning, we feel intimidated at the prospect of being completely vulnerable to the mean old dentist.  When I was about 7 years old, I remember shopping at the supermarket with my mom.  I bit into a piece of dried apricot and I could immediately feel an excruciating pain in my teeth.  What was this pain?  So, I immediately went to my dentist with my parents and they told me that I had about 6 to 7 cavities in my teeth due to poor oral hygiene.  Having moved straight in from Serbia to Canada, I didn’t know what a cavity what - I was 7!!  I then found out that taking care of a cavity was pretty painful.  So, it’s safe to say that my first experience with a dentist was not at all a pleasant one.

However, that entire experience was only caused by the poor maintenance of my teeth and nothing else.  All 7 cavities could have been avoided through persistent brushing, mouthwashing, and flossing.  But I was definitely scared of the dentist.  Although you can blame my lack of brushing for the fate I had to experience, I was really frightened of the tooth doctor and that initial experience with the dentist scarred me for life.

A few years later, when I was around 12 years old, I went to the dentist for a normal checkup and he told me that I had to get braces.  I was scared out of my mind.  Not only would I have to go through the painful experience of having my dentist do work on me, but I would also have to live with metallic little pieces in my mouth for a good 4 years of my life.  With much effort and time put in by my mom to make me go to the cosmetic dentistry firm, I obliged and was prepared to face the pain.

You need Adobe Flash Player to view this content.

However, I was pleasantly surprised.  Getting braces on was not a painful experience.  Rather, it was painless.  Sure, the process itself might have been tedious (it takes a while to completely finish the procedure), but I was more than satisfied with the end result and how my teeth looked after the procedure.  Once the operation was completed, I then started to worry about how I would handle living with them.  I’ve heard horror stories about how you can’t eat ANY of your favourite foods once you get them on because they would mess up the entire structure of the set.  However, once the procedure itself was complete, the doctor met up with me to discuss how my lifestyle will change because of braces.  I couldn’t chew gum, eat really chewy foods, peanut butter and other similar foods.  At first, I was taken aback but then I realized that this wouldn’t be that drastic of a change.  Sure, some of the food on that list were things that I ate daily, but most of it were items that I’ve never even eaten before.  So, this big "lifestyle change" never happened for me.  Instead, I got to eat ice cream for the first two weeks of getting them on! Now that’s what I call delicious.

So, to sum up, getting braces isn’t scary.  It’s a normal part of life that a lot of people end up getting to fix structural deficiencies in their teeth.  At the end of the process, your teeth are better than ever and straighter than ever - your smile’s a million times better and you’ll be more confident that you’ve ever been!

Cosmetic Contact Lenses - Are they Safe?

Posted by Jo on May 27, 2010 at 3:26 PM Comments comments (0)

Society as a whole promotes various trends that are ever changing, for year individuals have been adapting and changing to conform to these new ways of living and new lifestyles. One recent invention that is an ever growing trend are contact lenses. Contacts are cosmetic, corrective or therapeutic lenses which sit on an individual’s cornea. Cosmetic contact, better known as colour contacts, allow an individual to express their individuality by changing their eye colour or potentially changing the appearance of their cornea all together. The use of cosmetic contacts has become popular, as it allows an individual to express their individuality and gain a sense of freedom. Recently there has also been some controversy as to the safety of colour contacts and the potential damage they may cause to an individuals eyes.

After more research is emerging on cosmetic contacts the potential risk of blood flow restriction to the cornea, causing infection or potentially swelling of the eye has arisen. Infection can also result due to a build-up of dust beneath the lens; the reasoning behind this is because colour contacts tend to be more ridge allowing for the build-up of dust particles, where as corrective lenses are softer and are less likely to have any build-up.

Hygiene also plays a large factor in the amount of risk of infection associated with colour contacts. If the contacts are removed every night then an individuals risk of infection is greatly decreased, however if this is not done and the contacts are not removed at night corneal ulcers may result.

Cosmetic contacts may have some negative aspects associated with them, though as a whole, they can provide sufficient amounts of medication to the eye when it is dry or infected. They have proven to be more effective that eye drops as 95% of the medicine will impact parts of the eye that do not need it.

Though there are many negative aspect to cosmetic contacts, there are also some benefits. If you properly research the proper care and maintenance of you contact you can dramatically reduce the chance that an infection or other negative outcome will result.
